ORLEN Upstream to start drilling another exploration well in the Lublin region

07-12-2011  News

The drilling of the vertical exploration well Syczyn OU-1 in the commune of Wierzbica lasted 42 days. Now the drilling rig will be moved 60 kilometers further to start, as soon as 15 December, another exploration well at Berejowo in the Niedźwiada commune (Lubartów county).

ORLEN Upstream holds eight oil and natural gas exploration concessions in Poland. Six concession blocks (Bełżyce, Garwolin, Lubartów, Lublin, Wierzbica, Hrubieszów) are located in the Lublin region. The concessions cover resources from conventional and unconventional deposits, including shale gas.

“We have collected core samples from the Syczyn borehole at a depth of over 2.5 km; the samples will be lab tested. Rock material from Berejowo will be collected in much the same way and sent to be analyzed. Then, in five to six months’ time, a decision with respect to the drilling of horizontal wells on both these wellsites will be taken on the basis of the findings of the tests. We can say already that our earlier assumptions as to the deposition depth of sequential geological strata have been confirmed”, says Wiesław Prugar, President of the ORLEN Upstream Management Board.

“I hope that after the necessary tests are done the ORLEN Upstream team will return to Syczyn next year to proceed with further work. The success of this exploration for gas would mean an opportunity not just for this commune, but for the entire province”, said Andrzej Chrzastowski, Head of the Wierzbica commune.

On 4 November 2011 the District Mining Authority [OUG] in Lublin conducted a routine inspection of the geological work on the Syczyn OU-1 exploration well. OUG inspectors found the wellbore location and the well surface installation in full conformity with the well site layout submitted earlier. The inspection also established that the well site was properly marked with warning boards and properly secured and all employees had the required qualifications and training. Borehole safety and the condition of the environment were analyzed in detail. No lapses of provisions on general safety and on the environment were detected. Throughout the work detailed measuring/geological documentation was maintained and updated in line with the progress of geological work. The Berejowo OU-1 well, which is now under preparation, will also be inspected by the OUG. Then, on completion of the work, another review will be made.

Preparations for the Berejowo well have been underway for several weeks. The decision to locate the well in the Lubartów concession block was taken on the basis of analysis of archival and newly obtained geological data, including seismic tests made in mid-2011.
