Skołyszyn-OU1K – another ORLEN Upstream’s well in Podkarpacie

27-12-2017  News

To continue its exploration for hydrocarbon deposits in Southern Poland, ORLEN Upstream started drilling Skołyszyn-OU1K well, which is located in the area of the Karpaty Project. The region of Małopolska and Podkarpacie is one of the key areas of the upstream operations of PKN ORLEN in Poland.

The commenced well is located in the territory of Skołyszyn license (no 7/2016/p) and commune under the same name, which is located in Podkarpackie voivodeship. The planned depth of a well is 2119 m (TVD*), while its length - 2152 (MD**). The aim of conducted works is to obtain detailed and new information on the geological structure of the region and to discover potential hydrocarbon deposits. The planned activities will take ca. 80 days. Skołyszyn-OU1K is the third well drilled by ORLEN Upstream within the area of the Karpaty Project. Earlier wells include Lipinki-OU1 (2016) and Pasieki-OU1 (2017).

The area of the Karpaty Project consists of three licenses: Skołyszyn, Block 433/434, and Block 435. They are located in the External Carpathians. It is a well recognized area from the geological perspective and it has a very long oil-mining history. The geological objective for the search conducted within the scope of this project are the layers of Cretaceous, Palaeocene, Eocene, Oligocene and Miocene.

In the territory of Małopolska and Podkarpacie, oil has been exploited for more than 160 years. However, our research shows that there might be found hydrocarbon deposits in the area, which has not been documented yet and are waiting to be discovered.”, said Janusz Radomski, the President of the Management Board of ORLEN Upstream. “Southern Poland is one of the key areas for us in our exploration activities. Geological information acquired during the planned works will help to define further directions of our activities within the Karpaty Project”, he added.

Despite activities in the south of Poland, ORLEN Upstream performs drilling works in Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodeship, where the well Tuszynki-1K located in the area of Bysław-Wudzyń license in Bukowiec comune is drilled. This license is a part of the Edge Project. Moreover, ORLEN Upstream together with Polskie Górnictwo Naftowe i Gazownictwo have been drilling of Kotlin-3 well. It is located in the area of Płotki Project in Wielkopolskie voivodeship, Kotlin comune, the area of Jarocin-Grabina license.

* TVD (true vertical depth)  – total vertical depth of a well measured from the surface to the bottom of a well.
** MD (measured depth) – actual length of a well measured from the earth surfaces to the bottom of a well, and taking account of curvature of it.
