The Ministry of the Environment has granted 70 licences to search for unconventional gas (tight and shale gas). Out of the 70 licenses which have been issued so far, only 11 cover the search for this type of gas, while the remaining 59 are joint licences to search for conventional and unconventional hydrocarbons. Out of the 59 joint licences the most which have been granted to a single company are to Marathon Oil Poland – as many as 10. 7 of them have been purchased by Polskie Górnictwo Naftowe i Gazownictwo. Five licences belong to Orlen Upstream (PKN Orlen S.A.).
